As we approach the heart of hurricane season Dan Adams of Austin says he has heard Cape Verde hurricanes happen this time of year. Fox 7’s meteorologist Zack Shields explains what creates a Cape Verde hurricane.
Cape Verde-type hurricanes develop from tropical waves which form in the African savanna during the wet season.
The disturbances move off the western coast of Africa and become tropical storms or hurricanes near the Cape Verde islands usually in August and September. The average hurricane season has about two of them.
Normally the winds around the Bermuda high pressure system send the hurricanes toward North America. These storms are the most intense because they spin over warm ocean water for a couple weeks allowing them to gain more strength.
Since 1900, 44 major hurricanes have made the journey from Africa to North America.
The worst hurricanes to hit Texas have formed near the Cape Verde Islands. The Galveston hurricane of 1900 was one. It became the deadliest storm ever. The fifth most intense storm...Hurricane Allen in 1980 made the trip across the Atlantic. Last year category 4 Ike which smashed into Galveston started as a tropical wave near Africa. |
